Major Dickason’s Blend - Peet’s Coffee Review
We love a good dark coffee, and one company best known for their dark roasts and bold flavors is Peet’s Coffee. This time, we brought home Peet’s Major Dickason’s Blend, toting a description of flavorful, robust, and full-bodied. Let’s see how it measures up to the expectations set after drinking (and loving) Peet’s French roast.
We brewed Major Dickason’s Blend to our usual specs in the French press: 50g of coffee, 32oz of 202℉ water, steep for 4-5 minutes. When brewing dark and French roasts, you want to keep an extra eye on how long you steep for. If you let the grounds steep for too long, it’ll overextract and the coffee will turn bitter; too little and you won’t get the depth of flavors you are looking for.
Right away, we notice a dense earthy aroma with a lingering sweetness and once sipped, this brew has a full-bodied, smooth mouthfeel. We notice a forward caramel flavor, followed by a touch of smoke blended expertly with dark chocolate to leave the slightest dry finish. Each sip also has a stone-fruit sweetness (Mr. Brew thought apricots, I thought plums). The acidity is very mild and complements the chocolate notes to leave you wanting more.
Major Dickason’s Blend is a wonderful example of the complexities that can be roasted and brewed in dark roast coffee. Many are too smoky or too dense, and others are medium-roasts in disguise. This blend has the right balance of caramel and chocolate flavors while still remembering the coffee bean earthiness that should always take the stage.
If you are in need of a daily drinker or want a break from acidic coffees, or perhaps want to lighten up from the double-roasted French roasts, Major Dickason’s dark roast is a perfect brew. Grab a bag and brew on.
Cheers,
Mrs. Brew
